Ruth King McElhannon

Ruth King McElhannon, 76, of Union Point, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016.

The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Feb. 20 in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Pastor Jimmy Long officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens.

A native of Athens, Mrs. McElhannon was the daughter of the late Jack and Reba Woods King and was preceded in death by her husband, William Crawford McElhannon.

Survivors include four sons, Andrew Craig McElhannon of Union Point, John Barry McElhannon of Winterville, William David McElhannon of Commerce, Matthew Clark McElhannon of Santa Monica, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

The family requests memorial donations be made to First Call Pregnancy Center, 1531 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA 30642.

James Terry Nalepa

James Terry Nalepa, 70, of Cleveland, Ga. passed away Jan. 29, 2016.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Mr. Nalepa was born in Steubenville, Ohio May 16, 1945 to the late August Napela and Mary Christopher Nalepa. 

He served his country with honor in the U.S. Army. 

Mr. Nalepa owned and operated a dock building business in Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair area for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Terri McNair Nalepa, of Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and April Cobb of Athens; daughter, Amber Haslup of Clarkesville; brother and sister-in-law, Jan and Joyce Nalepa; and six grandchilden.

Mr. Marco Antonio Leyva, 28, of Eatonton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.

The funeral service was Monday, Feb. 15 at the Crestlawn Memorial Gardens on Highway 16 in Eatonton.

Marco Antonio Leyva was a very loving husband and a perfect father to his three kids. He will be missed very much. All those who knew and met him, appreciated his friendship.

Survivors include his wife, Yozelin Leyva of Eatonton; two daughters, Sherlyn Leyva, Victoria Leyva; a son, Marco Leyva Jr.; his mother, Martha Cardenasa; and a brother, Victor M. Leyva Jr. all of Eatonton.

Mr. Acie Daniel Jr. of Free Hold, N.J., formerly of Eatonton, departed this life Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New Jersey.

A funeral service was conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 from Union Baptist Church, 240 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Eatonton, with Pastor Johnny Harris officiating and presenting the eulogy. Burial with military honors followed the service in Eastside Eatonton City Cemetery.

Acie Daniel Jr. was born Oct. 8, 1950 to parents Acie and Oris “Red” Daniel. He received his education in the Putnam County school system.

Russ Allen

Claude Russell (“Russ”) Allen III, 84, of Eatonton, formerly of Atlanta and Lithia Springs, passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 29, 2016.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Feb. 12 at Williams Funeral Home of Milledgeville, 1670 N. Jefferson St. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m., with the service beginning at 2 p.m.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jean Yeager Allen; his parents, Claude R. Allen II and Carrie Allen of Atlanta; two sisters, Frances Duncan of Decatur and Doris Austin of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Mary Catherine Allen.

Mr. Allen was born in Atlanta in 1931 and grew up on the city’s west side, graduating from West Fulton High in 1948.

Harry P. “Tony” Thurman Sr. moved to his heavenly home Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.

Mr. Thurman was born in Atlanta March 1, 1930 to Elmore C. Thurman Sr. and Fannie Beavers. He was the fifth of seven children. A Methodist and native Atlantan his great grandfather settled in Fulton County in the early 1700s. He attended school in the Fulton county school system and attended Boy’s Tech High School.

He worked in the automotive industry for more than 42 years retiring from Automotive Brake and Clutch Company. 

He married Ann Dearman Thurman on April 20, 1946 and was married for 62 years, before her death in 2008. For many years he and Ann lived and raised their family in Tucker. He and Ann then retired in 1998 and moved to Lake Sinclair to live their dream.

Nancy Gleaton, 85, of Eatonton passed away at her residence Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Feb. 6 at Eatonton First United Methodist Church.

Ms. Gleaton was born in Atlanta May 19, 1930 to the late Jewett Thomas Christian and the late Annie Elizabeth Bartlett Christian.

In her younger days, she was a member of the Atlanta Civic Ballet and enjoyed dancing with the group. 

She was a member of Eatonton First United Methodist Church, Women’s Auxiliary of Putnam General Hospital, Eatonton Lakeside Hens, and enjoyed walking on the beach and spending time with her family.

Billy Sharp of Eatonton passed away at his residence Friday, Feb. 5, 2016.

The funeral service was Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at Lone Oak Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Mr. Sharp was born April 21, 1936 in Ellijay to the late James Ernest Sharp and the late Sally Mae Green Sharp. He was a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church and will always be remembered how he enjoyed to make people laugh and keep a smile on their face.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughters Paula and Rhonda Sharp.

A. Donald Stratton

A. Donald Stratton, 81, of Eatonton died Jan. 24, 2016.

The funeral service was private.

Mr. Stratton was born in South Amboy, N.J. and graduated from Harold G. Hoffman High School in 1951, Rutgers University in 1957 and Farleigh Dickenson University in 1963 with a Master of Business Administration degree.

While a resident of South Amboy, he was a member of Scout Troup 91, earned Eagle Scout rank and served on the staff at Camp Cowan in northern New Jersey.  He was Sunday school superintendent and teacher of the First United Methodist Church in South Amboy from 1956 to 1966.  He served in the U.S. Army, 25th Infantry and 369th Signal Corps Divisions from 1953 to 1956.
