Inmate tries to escape, adds 8 years

A Putnam County Jail inmate awaiting trial attempted to escape, using toothpaste in the place of plaster over a hole he was digging through the wall; but his idea wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

James Matthew Hyers, 42, of 117 S. Little River Court, Eatonton, was sentenced to eight years confinement for two charges of interference with government property. The sentencing was handed down by Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Judge E. Trenton Brown III in Putnam County Superior Court Monday, Aug. 21.
