FINAL FOUR: Lady Gators win two more to advance
The Gatewood Lady Gators are rolling through the 2017 GISA state basketball playoffs, having notched two victories last week over the Southland Lady Raiders on Feb. 21 and the Trinity-Dublin Lady Crusaders on Feb. 25.
The Lady Gators hosted the first round of the state playoffs against Southland, an opponent from the South Georgia region. The Lady Raiders did not make this victory an easy one, for they held the Lady Gators to a low-scoring battle.
The firstquarter was quite competitive, but the Lady Gators maintained a 13-10 lead going into the second quarter. The second quarter was quite defensive in nature; 12 combined points were tallied before the half. The Lady Gators still managed to increase their lead, however, and the halftime score read 21-14 in favor of Gatewood.
The Lady Gators would not cruise to victory in the second half, though. The Lady Raiders mounted a valiant comeback in the third quarter as they cut the Lady Gator lead to 4 points. Gatewood would recover and hold its lead in the final eight minutes of play, and, as the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Gators advanced to the second round with a 41-36 victory.
Junior posts, Tanner Fuller and Peri Hayes, would carry the banner for the Lady Gators offensively. Fuller would tally a game-high 14 points and 14 rebounds on the night while Hayes added another 8 points and 5 rebounds. Brenlyn Morris would lead the home team in the assist category with 5.
