James Alison Griffith
James Alison Griffith, 98, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2017.
The funeral service was Saturday, Jan. 21 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with Father David Probst officiating.
Mr. Griffith was born in Roscoe, Texas and later moved to Atlanta where he attended North Fulton High School.
After high school, he served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II in the Mediterranean.
He married Maredith Byrd of Newport, Tenn. on Aug. 23, 1945.
In April 1947, he started working for the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta and retired in July1968 as a senior officer.
After retirement, he and his wife moved to Eatonton, where he became involved in the organization of the Crooked Creek Station 5 Volunteer Fire Department. He served as assistant fire chief and was a past vice president of Crooked Creek Fire Department and Benevolent Society. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Maredith Byrd Griffith; a brother-in-law, Newell “Hop” Byrd (Jane); a niece, George Ann BulfinNunnally; two great-nieces Susan Griffith Hamer and Elise Nunnally Schultz (Warren); two grand-nephews, Warren T. Schultz and Gregory J. Schultz (Elizabeth); a nephew, Stephen P. Edwards (Brenda); a great-nephew, Adam Edwards; honorary grandchildren, Pat Mathis Smith (Ike), Jessica Klingener Minor (Doug), and Jessica and Doug’s daughters, Bay Minor and Maredith Alison Minor; and many beloved nieces and nephews of the Griffith and Byrd familes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 309, Milledgeville, GA 31059.
