Walter Lee Nelson

Mr. Walter Lee Nelson was born April 9, 1921 in Putnam County, Eatonton, to the union of Willie Marshall and Cornelia Ward Nelson. He departed this earthly life on Nov. 2, 2018.

Walter was a lifelong native of Putnam County. He received his education at Bell Chapel School and received a diploma for the Adult Academic Education from the Eatonton Col. High School. He served in World War II in the United States Army with the 947 Quarter Master Unit. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 583 and Bell Chapel Benevolent Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was married to Willie Kate Bishop Nelson for 70 years and to this union there were four sons and five daughters. He was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Nelson and Danny D Nelson; one daughter, Edna Nelson; great grandchild, Preston J Nelson and son-in-law, Read Cobb Jr; Brothers, Tommie Lee Nelson, Joseph Nelson, Willie Marshall Nelson, Mose Nelson, Rosell Nelson, and Jessie Nelson; Sisters, Lucy Ruff-Parham, Maggie Austin, Fannie Mae Daniel, Rose Mae Tapley, Lille Bell Askew, Gennie Nelson and Mary Allen.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife, Willie Kate Nelson; two sons, Jerry (Rosemary) Nelson, Terrence (Abigail) Nelson; four daughters, Barbara Walton, Velma Cobb, Frankie (Grady) Clemons, and Yolanda Nelson; 15 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren; Sister, Ada Nelson of Boston Mass.; brother, Robert (Bessie) Nelson of Cincinnati, Ohio; Sisterin-law, Mary Wade of Washington, D.C. and Linda Humphries of Eatonton, and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
