Two hospitalized after head-on wreck

CONTRIBUTED The front end of this Dodge pickup truck shows the severity of the impact after a head-on collision on Labor Day.

A Labor Day head-on collision sent two drivers to the hospital, one by medical helicopter.

According to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jeffrey Duncan, two pickup trucks were traveling in opposite lanes on Wards Chapel Road around the sharp curve near New Phoenix Road in the unincorporated part of the county around 5:45 p.m. James Buchanan, 68, of Marietta, was driving north in a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500, and Caleb Graham, 19, of Milledgeville, was heading south in his 2000 Ford F150. Graham crossed over the center line of the road into Buchanan’s lane and crashed into his truck.

Putnam County EMS was handling other calls and requested help from Greene County, Duncan said. Greene County EMS took Buchanan to an Athens hospital and Graham, who was more seriously injured according to Duncan, was flown to Navicent Health Medical Center in Macon. He was listed in fair condition on Tuesday at The Messenger’s press time, according to hospital spokesperson Megan Allen.

Duncan said charges are pending the results of blood lab tests.
