Another Putnam County athlete is set to play at the next level.
Lady War Eagles soccer star Marissa Murray recently signed to play soccer at Montreat College in North Carolina. Murray has been a big part of the Lady War Eagles’ season this year, helping them reach a 7-7 record and a 3-3 record in Region 8-AA before spring break.
Reaching the collegiate level in any sport is one of the most coveted things in American sports, and Murray’s performance on the field with the Lady Eagles has elevated to her a position few people can reach. College soccer has been a goal for Murray ever since she began playing the sport.
“I’m really excited for it,” Murray said about signing with Montreat. “This is something I’ve wanted to do since I started playing. It’s a big accomplishment for me.”
Murray had additional offers from other colleges who sought her out to play at the next level. She found favor with Montreat College over the other choices, however, due to the quality of the campus and the highly-talented and experienced members of the coaching staff.
“The campus was really beautiful,” Murray said. “The coaches played in college and professionally and also coached professionally, so I wanted to be around that type of skill level. “
The Lady Eagles are on spring break this week, and only have four regular season matches remaining. Putnam has a chance to make a playoff push if it can find success in the final few games of the season.
With a future college athlete like Murray on their team, the Lady Eagles have a chance to improve on their season from a year ago. Putnam reached the first round of the postseason last year, and with Murray’s skill on their side, the Lady Eagles can go farther and achieve more in the coming weeks.
