On Monday, July 30, the Lake Oconee Elks Lodge hosted a pizza party for 42 veterans at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville. Upon arrival at the home, the veterans were heavily involved in a game of Bingo. The veterans are serious about their Bingo games. However, they were more than happy to take a break and enjoy a pizza party. The Elks brought their favorite pizzas (sausage, pepperoni and supreme) and because the veterans love dessert, the Elks provided Krispy Kreme donuts and cookies.
There were plenty of Elks in attendance to make short order of serving up meals and taking care of all the veterans quickly by taking plates to the tables.
This was important because most of the veterans in attendance were in wheelchairs. The Elks enjoyed helping them, talking with the vets while they ate and helping return the veterans back to their rooms after the event was over.
The veterans love to eat and most of them had more than one helping and some took pizza and donuts back to their rooms with them. Bob Massey, one of the Elks, brought his service dog, Dixie, to visit with the veterans.
Dixie is a real sweetheart and loves people, so she was a big hit.
These regular luncheons and outings every month are made possible by a grant from the Elks National Foundation. Lake Oconee Elks loves its veterans and always looks forward to spending time with these special individuals that have so bravely served our country.
